Introduzione

Il terzo TROPEArte Plein Air Festival si svolgerà a Tropea dal 9 al 15 ottobre 2025. Tropea è un’antica città murata su una scogliera lungo il Mar Tirreno in Calabria. Per una settimana artisti da tutto il mondo si riuniscono per dipingere e creare arte “En Plein Air” (all’aperto) tra i vicoli stretti, le viste panoramiche, e sulla spiaggia per catturare parte della bellezza della città sulle loro tele, a per celebrare le dimensioni storiche, mitiche e leggendarie di Tropea. Il festival culmina con una celebrazione e una mostra di opere create durante il festival. Il festival prevede anche la partecipazione di uno straordinario gruppo di bambini e artisti diversamente abili, guidati da Pasqualina Del Mastro.

Programma del Festival

Sede: La sede principale del festival sarà l’Antico Sedile dei Nobili (Piazza Ercole, Tropea, VV, 89861). Se gli artisti hanno bisogno di un posto dove sedersi e riposare, questo luogo sarà aperto per loro dalle 9:00 alle 11:00 e dalle 16:00 alle 18:00. Questo sarà anche il luogo della mostra d’arte e del gala di fine festival.

Programma: Questo è un festival “leggero,” in cui gli artisti sono incoraggiati a trovare l’ispirazione da soli e a dipingere liberamente, con incontri organizzati solo occasionali. In quanto tale, il programma è semplice. Ecco le date e i luoghi chiave di cui tenere traccia.

  • 9 OTT: Inizio e benvenuto al Festival. Gli artisti porteranno le loro tele o superfici di lavoro da timbrare ufficialmente, oltre a ritirare i loro badge ufficiali e pacchetti informativi, presso l’Antico Sedile dei Nobili dalle 09:00 alle 10:45.
  • 9 OTT: Visita guidata gratuita del centro storico di Tropea e aperitivo inaugurale. Visita guidata con l’archeologo locale Dario Godano di Libertas, e l’attrice Adele Rombolà (con una traduzione in inglese da Francesco Femia), coprendo la dimensione mitica e leggendaria di Tropea. La gita parte dall‘Antico Sedile dei Nobili alle 10:45, concludendo alle 12:45, dopodiché ci sarà un aperitivo inaugurale, fornito da Patrizia Fortunato della Boutique della Cipolla Rossa, dalle 12:45 alle 13:30 al Giardino Seminario Vescovile – Via Glorizio.
  • 9-11 OTT: Dipingere “en plein air.” Gli artisti sono incoraggiati a dipingere quanto vogliono durante la settimana e “en plein air” (all’aperto). Quattro piazze specifiche (Piazza Cannone, Largo Migliarese, Largo Duomo, e Largo Galluppi) saranno i siti principali in cui gli artisti si radunano per dipingere insieme, ma dopo, gli artisti potranno scegliere di girovagare e dipingere altrove. Chiediamo che gli artisti si radunano all’Antico Sedile dei Nobili alle 9:00. Gli artisti bambini di TROPEArte Junior si radunano all’Antico Sedile dei Nobili alle 17:00, e gli artisti diversamente abili alle 10 di mattina.
  • 11 OTT: Iscrizioni alla mostra d’arte (scadenza 17:00). Gli artisti possono scegliere una o due delle loro opere preferite *che hanno dipinto a Tropea durante la settimana* per l’esposizione nella mostra d’arte del Festival. Verranno consegnate all’Antico Sedile dei Nobili.
  • 12 OTT: Mostra d’arte (19:00 – 21:30). Una serata per celebrare e mettere in mostra la settimana del fare arte insieme. La mostra sarà accompagnata da un connubio artistico musicale offerto da due ospiti d’eccezione, Luigi Cerra, al pianoforte, e Thekla De Marco, al canto. La mostra si terrà all’Antico Sedile dei Nobili.
  • 13-15 OTT: Estensione della mostra d’arte. Gli artisti sono invitati a lasciare le loro opere in mostra fino alle 19:00 del 15 ottobre, quando tutte le opere d’arte dovranno essere recuperate dagli artisti.

TROPEArte Junior: I minorenni che partecipano al festival TROPEArte devono essere registrati e accompagnati da un genitore o tutore. I minorenni di età compresa tra 7 e 12 anni possono partecipare al festival attraverso il programma “TROPEArte Junior” e devono essere registrati e accompagnati da un genitore o tutore.   • Noleggio barche/giro. Tropea si trova lungo la costa del Mar Tirreno, e la cosiddetta Costa degli Dei. Oltre a dipingere il paesaggio marino dalla riva, gli artisti possono scegliere di noleggiare una barca o fare un giro in barca e dipingere la vista dalla prua della barca che guarda verso la scogliera (tempo permettendo).   • Attenzione al potenziale di vento e pioggia. Ottobre a Tropea ha un intervallo di temperature elevate da 20°C a 24°C, e un intervallo di temperature basse da 15°C a 18°C.
  • Oltre a ristoranti e bar, ci saranno luoghi designati in tutta la città dove gli artisti saranno comodi e asciutti in caso di maltempo pur essendo all’aria aperta. Queste località includeranno l’Antico Sedile dei Nobili.

  • Ci sono diversi negozi di forniture artistiche locali a Tropea, nel caso in cui gli artisti abbiano bisogno di integrare i loro materiali o desiderino acquistarli sul posto, al fine di alleviare l’onere di viaggiare con le forniture. Tieni presente che la maggior parte dei negozi di Tropea, inclusi questi, chiudono per 2 – 3 ore e mezza a pranzo.

Introduction

The third annual TROPEArte Plein Air Festival will be held in Tropea, Italy from October 9-15, 2025. Tropea is an ancient walled town on a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea in southern Italy’s Calabria region. For one week artists from around the world gather together to paint and create art in “plein air” (outdoors) amongst the narrow alleyways, the scenic overlooks, and on the beach to capture some of the town’s beauty on their canvases, and to celebrate the historical, mythical, and legendary dimensions of Tropea. The festival culminates with a celebration and an exhibit of works created during the festival. The festival also includes the participation of an extraordinary group of children and disabled artists, guided by Pasqualina Del Mastro.

Festival Agenda

Headquarters: The central headquarters for the festival will be the Antico Sedile dei Nobili (Piazza Ercole, Tropea, VV, 89861). If artists need a place to sit and rest, this location will be open to them from 10:00-11:00 and 16:00-18:00. This will also be the location for the art show and gala at the end of the festival.

TROPEArte Schedule: This is a “light-touch” festival, wherein artists are encouraged to find inspiration on their own and to paint freely, with only occasional organized gatherings. As such, the schedule is a simple one. Below are the  key dates and locations to keep track of.

  • OCT 9: Festival Opening and Welcome. Artists will bring their canvases or work surfaces to be officially stamped, as well as collect their official badges and information packets, at the Antico Sedile dei Nobili from 09:00-10:45.
  • OCT 9: Free Guided Tour of the Historic Center of Tropea and Inaugural Aperitif. A guided walking tour of the historic center of Tropea with local archeologist Dario Godano of Libertas, and actress Adele Rombolà (with English translation by Francesco Femia), covering the mythic and legendary dimensions of Tropea. The tour will depart from the Antico Sedile dei Nobili at 10:45am and run until 12:45pm, after which there will be an inaugural aperitif, provided by the Boutique della Cipolla Rossa, from 12:45-1:30pm at the Giardino Seminario Vescovile – Via Glorizio.
  • OCT 9-11: Plein air painting. Artists are encouraged to paint as much as they’d like throughout the week, and “en plein air” (outdoors). Four specific piazzas (Piazza Cannone, Largo Migliarese, Largo Duomo, and Largo Galluppi) will be the main sites for painters to paint together, though artists may later choose to wander around and paint elsewhere. We ask that artists meet at the Antico Sedile dei Nobili every morning at 9:00. The children artists of TROPEArte Junior will gather at the Antico Sedile dei Nobili at 5:00 pm, and the disabled artists at 10:00 am.
  • OCT 11: Art show submissions (Deadline 17:00). Artists may choose one or two of their favorite works *that they painted in Tropea during the week* for display in the Festival art show and gala. Your paintings should be delivered to the Antico Sedile dei Nobili
  • OCT 12: Art Show (19:00 – 21:30). An evening to celebrate and show off the week of creating art together. The show will be accompanied by a musical collaboration between two special guests, Luigi Cerra, on piano, and Thekla De Marco, on vocals. The show will be held at the Antico Sedile dei Nobili.
  • OCT 13-15: Art Show Extension. Artists are welcome to leave their work on display until 19:00 on October 15, when all works of art must be retrieved by the artists.

TROPEArte Junior Details: Minors that participate in the TROPEArte festival must be registered and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Minors between the ages of 7-12 are invited to participate in the festival through the “TROPEArte Junior” program, and must be registered and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Other Activity Options 

  • Boat rental/tour. Tropea sits along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the so-called Coast of the Gods. In addition to painting the seascape from the shore, artists may choose to rent a boat or take a boat tour and paint the vista from the bow of the boat looking out to the cliffside (weather and boat-availability permitting).

Rain Plan/ Average Temperatures 

  • Plan for the potential of wind and rain. October in Tropea has a high temperature range of 20°C to 24°C, and a low temperature range of 15°C to 18°C.
  • In addition to restaurants and cafes, there will be designated locations across town where artists will be cozy and dry in the event of inclement weather while still being in “plein air.” These locations include the Antico Sedile dei Nobili.

Materials/ Art Supply Stores 

  • See advice from “Dublin Plein Air” for helpful materials lists.
  • There are several local art supply stores in Tropea, should artists need to supplement their materials or wish to purchase them on location, in order to alleviate the burden of traveling with supplies. Keep in mind that most shops in Tropea, including these, close for 2 – 3 ½ hours for lunch.

  • Tropea is home to hundreds of beautiful hotels and bed and breakfasts for a range of budgets. These can be found via Booking.com, Airbnb.com or other Tropea hotel searches.

Travel Logistics 

  • Air: The closest local airport is Lamezia Terme International Airport (SUF), a roughly 50-minute drive from Tropea
  • Train: The closest train stop is Tropea station. The train station is about a 200 meter walk from the historic center of the town.
  • Taxi: Google “Tropea Taxi” and you will find a number of taxi services.
