The second annual TROPEArte Plein Air Festival will be held in Tropea, Italy from October 8-17, 2024. Tropea is an ancient walled town on a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea in southern Italy’s Calabria region. For one week artists from around the world gather together to paint and create art in “plein air” (outdoors) amongst the narrow alleyways, the scenic overlooks, and on the beach to capture some of the town’s beauty on their canvases. The festival culminates with a celebration and an exhibit of works created during the festival.

The theme for 2024 will be “Following in the Footsteps of Escher.” The famous Dutch artist Maurits Corneli Escher, master of visual perception, between 1930 and 1931, visiting various beautiful towns in Calabria, was fascinated and struck by the light of the region, by the geometric architecture of the town landscapes, and by the vertical constructions on the sheer rocks and cliffs overlooking the sea – realizing a significant series of artworks based on his travels, including a lithograph of Tropea perched on the cliffside. It is precisely in the south of Italy that Escher developed a good portion of those ideas and suggestions which later manifested, in a synthesis between science and art, in his most well-known body of works. In the coming months we will publish a detailed Google map with all the places visited by Escher, based on the indispensable book M.C. Escher in Calabria by Domenico Mediati and Saverio Pazzano, and we invite you to visit them too, if you can, before coming to Tropea for the TROPEArte Plein Air Festival, in order to be draw further inspiration from the region.

Il secondo festival annuale di TROPEArte Plein Air si svolgerà a Tropea dal 8 al 17 ottobre 2024. Tropea è un’antica città murata su una scogliera lungo il Mar Tirreno in Calabria. Per una settimana artisti da tutto il mondo si riuniscono per dipingere e creare arte a “Plein Air” (all’aperto) tra i vicoli stretti, le viste panoramiche, e sulla spiaggia per catturare parte della bellezza della città sulle loro tele. Il festival culmina con una celebrazione e una mostra di opere create durante il festival.

Il tema di 2024 sarà “Seguendo la Strada di Escher.” Il famoso artista olandese Maurits Corneli Escher, mago della percezione visiva, tra il 1930 éd il 1931, visitando diversi e suggestivi borghi della Calabria, fu affascinato e colpito dalla luce e dal sole della regione, dalle architetture geometriche dei paesaggi, dalle costruzioni verticali sulle rocce e gli strapiombi sul mare – realizzando una seria significative di opere d’arte, inclusa una litografia di Tropea arroccata sulla scogliera. E’ proprio nel sud d’Italia che Escher matura buona parte di quelle idee e suggestioni che concretizzano, in una sintesi tra scienza ed arte, la sua piu’ completa produzione artistica. Festival Overview 

Introduction: The second annual TROPEArte Plein Air Festival will be held in Tropea (VV), Italy from October 23-28 2023, though artists will be welcome to continue showing their art on October 29. Tropea is an ancient walled town on a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea in southern Italy’s Calabria region, in the province of Vibo Valentia. For one week local artists and artists from around the world will gather together to paint “en plein air,” or outdoors amongst the narrow alleyways, the scenic overlooks, and on the beach to try and capture some of the town’s beauty on their canvases. The festival will culminate with a celebration and exhibit of the works created during the festival week.

Headquarters: The central headquarters for the festival will be the Palazzo Santa Chiara (Largo Ruffa n. 1, Tropea (VV), 89861). If artists need a place to sit and rest, this location will be open to them from 10:00-18:00. This will also be the location for the art show and gala at the end of the festival.

Schedule: This is a “light-touch” festival, wherein artists are encouraged to find inspiration on their own and to paint freely, with only occasional organized gatherings. As such, the schedule is a simple one. Here are the  key dates and locations to keep track of.

  • OCT 23: Festival Opening and Welcome. Artists may collect their official badges and information packets at Palazzo Santa Chiara from 10:00-18:00. There will be an official welcome at 18:00.
  • OCT 23-27: Plein air painting. Artists are encouraged to paint as much as they’d like throughout the week, and “en plein air” (outdoors). All registered participants will be free to set themselves up throughout Tropea and paint to their heart’s content!
  • OCT 25: An all expenses-paid painting, food and drink excursion to the onion fields of the Boutique della Cipolla Rossa and the vineyards of Marchisa for interested artists. Artists that are interested in participating should send an email to tropearte@gmail.com by October 6, indicating any dietary restrictions and whether or not you will require transport (we will be providing a bus service which seats 35 people – first come, first served). Here is the day’s agenda:
    • 10:00-12:30: Excursion to the onions fields of the Boutique Della Cipolla Rossa, where artists will have the chance to sketch among the terraced hills with a view of the island volcano, Stromboli, in the distance. Click here for the location on Apple maps, if you will be driving.
    • 13:00-17:30: From the onion fields, artists will then travel to the vineyards of Marchisa for painting, as well as local wine and food provided by both Marchisa and the Boutique Della Cipolla Rossa. Click here for the location on Google maps, if you will be driving.
  • OCT 27: Art show submissions (Deadline 17:00). Artists may choose one-two of their favorite works *that they painted in Tropea during the week* for display in the Festival art show and gala.
  • OCT 28: Art Show (18:00 – 22:00). An evening to celebrate and show off the week of creating art together. Artists are able to collect their paintings at the end of the evening, or the next day.
  • OCT 29: Art show extension and day of the arts. Artists are welcome to leave their work for an additional day of viewing. This day will include various arts activities like poetry readings and music. Artists may collect their work at the end of the evening (no later than 19:00). 
  • OCT 30: Any artists who have not yet collected their art from Palazzo Santa Chiara must do so by 12:00.

Other Activity Options 

  • Moonlight painting. October’s full moon will be the evening of the art show on Oct. 28. The evenings leading up to this, weather depending, will be filled with moonlight and moon shadows. Artists are welcome and encouraged to capture some of this beauty on their canvases.
  • Boat rental/tour. Tropea sits along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the so-called Coast of the Gods. In addition to painting the seascape from the shore, artists may choose to rent a boat or take a boat tour and paint the vista from the bow of the boat looking out to the cliffside (weather permitting). More details TBD.

Rain Plan/ Average Temperatures 

  • Plan for the potential of wind and rain. The end of October in Tropea has a high temperature range of 20°C to 24°C, and a low temperature range of 15°C to 18°C.
  • In addition to restaurants and cafes, there will be designated locations across town where artists will be cozy and dry in the event of inclement weather while still being in “plein air.” These locations will be identified in artist participant packages distributed on the first day of the festival. The Palazzo Santa Chiara will also be open throughout the festival (except for the afternoon and evening of Oct 24), should artists need to use it for shelter from the rain.

Materials/ Art Supply Stores 

  • See advice from “Dublin Plein Air” for helpful materials lists.
  • There are several local art supply stores in Tropea, should artists need to supplement their materials or wish to purchase them on location, in order to alleviate the burden of traveling with supplies. Keep in mind that most shops in Tropea, including these, close for 2 – 3 ½ hours for lunch.

Accommodations 

  • Tropea is home to hundreds of beautiful hotels and bed and breakfasts for a range of budgets. These can be found via Booking.com or other Tropea hotel searches.

Travel Logistics 

  • Air: The closest local airport is Lamezia Terme International Airport (SUF), a roughly 50-minute drive from Tropea
  • Train: The closest train stop is Tropea station. The train station is about a 200 meter walk from the historic center of the town.
  • Taxi: Google “Tropea Taxi” and you will find a number of taxi services.

Tropea è un’antica città murata su una scogliera lungo il Mar Tirreno in Calabria. Per una settimana artisti locali e da tutto il mondo si riuniranno per dipingere e creare arte “en plein air” (all’aperto) tra i vicoli stretti, le viste panoramiche, e sulla spiaggia per catturare parte della bellezza della città sulle loro tele. Il festival culminerà con una celebrazione e una mostra di opere create durante la settimana.

Sede: La sede principale del festival sarà Palazzo Santa Chiara (Largo Ruffa n. 1, Tropea (VV), 89861). Se gli artisti hanno bisogno di un posto dove sedersi e riposare, questo luogo sarà aperto per loro dalle 10:00 alle 18:00, tranne il pomeriggio e la sera del 24 ottobre, per caso di un concerto. Questo sarà anche il luogo della mostra d’arte e del gala di fine festival.

  • 25 OTT: Escursione di pittura, cibo e bevande nei campi di cipolla della Boutique della Cipolla Rossa e nei vigneti di Marchisa per artisti interessati. Gli artisti interessati a partecipare dovranno inviare una mail a tropearte@gmail.com entro il 6 ottobre, indicando eventuali restrizioni dietetiche e se avrete bisogno di trasporto (forniremo un servizio di autobus che può ospitare 35 persone – primo arrivato, primo servito). Ecco il programma della giornata:
    • 10:00-12:30: Escursione ai campi di cipolle della Boutique Della Cipolla Rossa, dove gli artisti avranno la possibilità di disegnare sulle colline terrazzate con una vista del vulcano, Stromboli, in lontananza. Clicca qui per la posizione su Google Maps, se guiderete.
    • 13:00-17:30: Dai campi di cipolle, gli artisti si recheranno poi ai vigneti di Marchisa, per dipingere, oltre che per l’enogastronomia locale fornita sia da Marchisa che dalla Boutique Della Cipolla Rossa. Clicca qui per la posizione su Google Maps, se guiderete.
  • 27 OTT: Iscrizioni alla mostra d’arte (scadenza 17:00). Gli artisti possono scegliere una o due delle loro opere preferite *che hanno dipinto a Tropea durante la settimana* per l’esposizione nella mostra d’arte del Festival.
  • 28 OTT: Mostra d’arte (18:00 – 22:00). Una serata per celebrare e mettere in mostra la settimana del fare arte insieme. Gli artisti possono ritirare i loro dipinti alla fine della serata o il giorno successivo.
  • 29 OTT: Estensione della mostra d’arte e giornata delle arti. Gli artisti sono invitati a lasciare il loro lavoro per un giorno in più. Questa giornata includerà varie attività artistiche come letture di poesie e musica. Gli artisti potranno ritirare le proprie opere al termine della serata (entro le ore 20:00).
  • 30 OTT: Gli artisti che non hanno ancora ritirato la loro arte da Palazzo Santa Chiara devono farlo entro le 12:00.

  • Dipingere al chiaro di luna. La luna piena di ottobre sarà la sera della mostra d’arte del 28 ottobre. Le serate precedenti, a seconda del tempo, saranno piene di chiaro di luna e ombre lunari. Gli artisti sono accolti e incoraggiati a catturare parte di questa bellezza sulle loro tele.
  • Noleggio barche/giro. Tropea si trova lungo la costa del Mar Tirreno, e la cosiddetta Costa degli Dei. Oltre a dipingere il paesaggio marino dalla riva, gli artisti possono scegliere di noleggiare una barca o fare un giro in barca e dipingere la vista dalla prua della barca che guarda verso la scogliera (tempo permettendo). Maggiori dettagli da definire.

Piano Pioggia/ Temperature Medie

  • Attenzione al potenziale di vento e pioggia. La fine di ottobre a Tropea ha un intervallo di temperature elevate da 20°C a 24°C, e un intervallo di temperature basse da 15°C a 18°C.
  • Oltre a ristoranti e bar, ci saranno luoghi designati in tutta la città dove gli artisti saranno comodi e asciutti in caso di maltempo pur essendo all’aria aperta. Queste località saranno identificate nei pacchetti dei partecipanti agli artisti distribuiti il ​​primo giorno del festival. Anche il Palazzo Santa Chiara sarà aperto per tutta la durata del festival (tranne il pomeriggio e la sera del 24 ottobre), qualora gli artisti ne avessero bisogno per ripararsi dalla pioggia.

Tieni presente che la maggior parte dei negozi di Tropea, inclusi questi, chiudono per 2 – 3 ore e mezza a pranzo.
